This...[pause for effect]...is American Idol

As part of our crazy, raging social scene, Sameer and I are regular viewers of American Idol. Given our work schedules, we usually end up watching the show off of our DVR during the weekend, and recently it occurred to me that this was maybe the one show we watch that Sonia could watch too (as much as I love TV, even I know that letting Sonia watch Grey's Anatomy is not a good idea). And, I thought it might reinforce Sonia's affection for singing, since of late she has been serenading us more and more with her renditions of such classics as Itsy-Bitsy Spider and the ABC song.

To say Sonia enjoys watching American Idol would be an understatement. After one viewing she began to request "the singers" whenever she thinks she might convince us to turn on the television (although Mickey Mouse remains a neck-in-neck competitor for favorite show). She is the Paula Abdul of our household, pronouncing "I liked it" after each singer finishes (although like Simon she shows complete disdain for Ryan Seacrest, and actively whines until we fast forward to the next song). I'm sure that we are bad parents for letting her watch it, but she just enjoys it too much to deny her.

And, I think it has reinforced her own love of singing, because the amount of singing and dancing has definitely been on the upswing of late. I've noticed that in the back stories for all of the contestants on AI they always have videos of them singing when they are little...so debuting for the first time in the blogosphere, here is Sonia and her rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. All I can say is that she has two tone deaf parents, so it's really not fair to judge her given she has never heard anyone sing well. :-)

Proof of Life

We're alive. I realize there's been no evidence of that on this blog, or really anywhere else since we've basically fallen off the planet since moving, but rest assured everything is alive and well with us. Just crazy, unbelievably hectic. Since the last post, we've moved into our new house and it is actually starting to feel like home. But, because we like to make everything as hard as possible, we decided to move into a new house and have Sonia's nanny go on a 2-month vacation at the same time. (Actually, our nanny planned her trip home to India months ago, and arranged for a back-up while she's gone, and then we happened to buy a house at the exact same time.) Sonia was definitely a bit stressed by the experience...2-year-olds only have so many ways of expressing this, and Sonia's method of choice was to wet her pants 6 times the day after our move. Nice. But, after a few weeks at the house and playing each day with our substitute nanny, Sonia is basically back to normal. And she is very excited about activities at the "new house," including watering the flowers in the yard, "running around outside" (doing a lap between front and back yards), and seeing the "mama and baby bird" down the street (an arguably very tacky mailbox six houses down that has fake birds on it that Sonia is obsessed with).

We're settling into the neighborhood, including meeting all of our fantastic neighbors. I've been amazed at how friendly everyone is, proactively coming by the house to introduce themselves, bringing us flowers and brownies...basically confirming they are all nicer people than we are. Best of all, we have met at least two families on the street who have kids Sonia's age (both boys), so Sameer is already imagining playdates as well as losing sleep over first boyfriends.

Just so loyal blog readers don't forget what Sonia looks like, here is a recent photo of us hanging out at the neighborhood Starbucks (sadly, not across the street as we were used to in the old house, but nevertheless we're managing to put in regular appearances). Sonia usually doesn't like cookies, but for some reason when we bought them directly from the Girl Scouts they became infinitely more appealing, so here she is enjoying her first sugar rush of the day.
